Modules

NowWhat exposes software through Lmod modules. Use module avail to inspect the current catalogue and module load to activate one module in a shell or job script.

What Modules Do

Modules let you load a specific software stack into the current shell without editing permanent shell configuration files. They typically adjust variables such as:

• PATH
• LD_LIBRARY_PATH
• compiler settings
• MPI settings
• application-specific runtime variables

Use modules in login sessions for preparation and in job scripts for reproducible execution.

Compiler and MPI choices must be compatible. If you switch compiler family, MPI version, or low-level toolchain, rebuild your application and related libraries.

Operational Notes

• use module purge before loading a new stack
• keep module loads explicit in job scripts
• document compiler, MPI, CUDA, and application versions
• avoid relying on shell startup files for production jobs
• validate performance-sensitive software inside a SLURM allocation
